Why I Stopped Paying for Jungle Scout

Jungle Scout is $69/month (billed annually = $828/year). Helium 10 is even more expensive.

For dropshipping product research, I was using maybe 20% of what these tools offer. I was paying for keyword research I didn't need, inventory tracking for brands I didn't own, and supplier directories I never used.

I switched to a combination of Apify scrapers that does what I actually need: find products that are selling, check competition, and verify pricing margins — for about $5/month total.

The Research Workflow

Here's my exact 4-step process using the scrapers from the Apify Scrapers Bundle.

Step 1: Find Trending Products (TikTok Shop Scraper)

TikTok Shop is where dropshipping trends start. I run the TikTok Shop trending scraper every Monday morning. It pulls:

  • Products with highest sales velocity (units sold in last 7 days)
  • Category breakdown
  • Price range
  • Seller count (more sellers = more competition)

Filter: Products with 500+ sales/week, <20 sellers, under $30 retail price.

This gives me a shortlist of 10-15 products per week worth investigating.

Step 2: Validate on Amazon (Amazon Product Scraper)

For each shortlist product, I check the Amazon equivalent:

  • Number of similar products (market size)
  • Review count on top listings (barrier to entry — >1000 reviews = harder to compete)
  • Price range and BSR (Best Seller Rank)
  • "Frequently bought together" — reveals upsell opportunities

Filter: Products with 3-4 similar listings, under 300 reviews on top seller, BSR under 50,000.

Step 3: Check Competitor Pricing (Price Comparison Scraper)

I run the product title through the price comparison scraper to find it across:

  • Amazon
  • eBay
  • Walmart
  • AliExpress (for source pricing)

This gives me the spread: buy at $3-5 from AliExpress, sell at $19-25 on Amazon. Margin check passed.

Step 4: Monitor Winners (Price Drop Alert)

For products I decide to source, I set up a price monitor on my top competitors. If their price drops >15%, I get an email alert — so I can react before I lose sales.

What This Costs

Scraper Monthly usage Cost
TikTok Shop (4 runs/month) ~2,000 products ~$0.80
Amazon validation (40 checks) 40 products ~$0.40
Price comparison (20 products) 80 prices ~$0.20
Price monitoring (10 alerts) ongoing ~$0.50
Total ~$2/month

Plus the $29 one-time bundle purchase.

Compared to $69/month for Jungle Scout = savings of ~$66/month after the first month.
